Vanessa Berlowitz is the Series Producer for Frozen Planet. She started at the BBC Natural History Unit as a Researcher in 1991and has gone on to produce a number of highly acclaimed and award-winning series. This includes Bear Crime – Caught in the Act in 2000 and the BAFTA nominated Life of Mammals, with Sir David Attenborough in 2002. This was followed by the fascinating and moving Elephant Cave, in 2003.
Vanessa followed this up as Producer/Director on Planet Earth, as well as making a 50-minute version of the Planet Earth Diaries to accompany the cinematic release of the film, Earth. In 2007 Vanessa started working as Series Producer of Frozen Planet, the follow up to Planet Earth, and is Producer of the first programme in the series, To The Ends of The Earth, first broadcast in March 2012. In addition Vanessa has contributed to a number of books and magazines, and is frequently a public speaker at schools and universities about wildlife and conservation.
I spent over 10 years of my career trying and failing to get a sequence of the snow leopard on a variety of projects. It really had become a bit of a holy grail. After months of trying first in the Himalayas and then in Pakistan, we finally succeeded. When Jeff Wilson called me on Boxing Day to say they had just managed to film the first ever hunting snow leopard, I initially thought he was pulling my leg. It was the best Christmas present ever...
