  • Lion - Out of Africa Trophy lion manes and hunting politics
Up
This clip from Lion – Out of Africa, is produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. It explains the symbolic importance of the adult lion's mane to the pride in signifying a male lion's experience and virility. It takes five years to grow to its full bushy splendour, but is unfortunately the main target for hunters. As the king of the savannah disappears, young and inexperienced males take over the pride and will kill any cubs from a former sire. The numbers of lions have fallen by almost two thirds more than previously thought in Africa and this programme asks is hunting to blame? You decide - by watching this fascinating and moving footage.
