Bethan Evans, Researcher, Human Planet, Arctic and Mountains

Bethan did not grow up in the jungle or in a desert but on the wild Welsh coast, which had its own share of interesting cultures and beautiful landscape.

From a young age she yearned to travel, meet new people and document the goings on around her. At school she decided on a career in journalism but was told that not many girls from rural Wales would make it in the industry. Rather than be perturbed this made her more determined.

After graduating from University, Bethan began her TV career in London, where she worked on a variety of programs from sports to quiz shows. However, Bethan found that to follow her passion for documentaries she had to move closer to home and to Cardiff where she worked on the BAFTA winning Tribe series.
As Tribe came to an end an advert appeared for a position that could only be described as Bethan’s dream job – researching and filming the connections between man and nature for Human Planet.

The dream job became a reality, Bethan has been able to achieve her objective of combining work and adventure and has many great Human Planet memories, from trekking through cloud forests with Papuan tribesmen, lifting polar bears to safety by helicopter and camping out with Inuit hunters on sea ice for weeks on end. Roll on the next adventure!

Gathering together with the local people and the film crew to watch an amazing light show by the Aurora Borealis after a very cold but enjoyable days work filming mussel gatherers and igloo building in Arctic Canada.

Going on a recce to Papua New Guinea and joining three tribesmen as they went on an overnight hunt for flying foxes in the cloud forest.  As we sat around the camp fire communicating in broken English and smiles I realised how very fortunate I was to gain these experiences and how lucky I was to spend it with people who treated me like family, even though I'd only been with them for a day or two.
